Our Mission
"Provide citizens with disabilities with the support they need to lead full and meaningful lives."
Kokua is a residential support agency serving adults with disabilities. Kokua's mission is to provide the encouragement, support and care necessary to enable persons with disabilities to lead full and meaningful lives. We believe it is the right of our clients to participate in the life of their community, including the right to meaningful work and the right to take measured risks in pursuit of their dreams.
Kokua was founded as a for-profit corporation in 1990 and has been a DDD contracted provider of residential services since that time. In 1997, Kokua reorganized as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit with the intention of providing services beyond the scope of state funding. We believe that our local community has both the will and the capacity to create sensible solutions to local needs.
8th Avenue Advocates
In 2001, Kokua began sponsorship of a small disability rights group made up of local self-advocates. In 2002, 2004, and again in 2006, Kokua helped this group secure county funding for its meetings and public presentations. This group meets monthly at the Lacey Library. They focus on personal empowerment, public education and legislative advocacy. If you would like more information, you may call Andria at 491-8179 or email pjwheeler@aol.com. Kokua is proud to sponsor the work of the 8th Avenue Advocates.
Community Resource Center
Kokua’s vision for the future includes the creation of a regional resource center for individuals with disabilities. We envision a center that provides individually-tailored services: communication therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, wheelchair fitting, and repair, community living skills classes, classes for family members and caregivers, consumer-driven recreational opportunities. Help us plan for the future by taking our Community Resource Center Needs Assessment.
