2006 Milestones of Growth
Strategic Plan
After nine months of intensive work, the Strategic Planning Committee presented the Board with the 2006-2009 Kokua Strategic Plan. This was the agency’s first long range planning effort. The completed plan is a vibrant vision of how the agency intends to remake and improve itself over the next three years. Many Strategic Plan goals are already in progress. The results can be seen in improved efficiency and better coordination of client services.
Mission and Vision
As an outgrowth of the long range planning effort, Kokua reviewed its existing mission and vision statements. We realized that, because Kokua has grown and evolved, our original statements were in need of revision. We wanted mission and vision statements that were dynamic and which reflected the agency’s direction for the future. The results of this effort have a prominent place here on the agency’s new website.
Volunteer Program
In 2006 we launched of our new Volunteer and Internship Program. The main focus of this program is to link individuals receiving services with community volunteers who share similar interests. We also value our educational interns who bring new learning, new perspectives to share with Kokua staff.
Communication Skills Program
Last year Kokua’s Support Team made great strides in improving Kokua’s capacity to support individuals with communication challenges. Many individuals require long-term support to learn to initiate communication. Each individual has a constellation of strengths and deficits that require individualized planning. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Kokua has invested in technological tools that will help many of our clients to move toward more effective communication methods.
MEOW
Music Education on Wheels, co-sponsored by the Olympia Free School, is a class designed to promote personal expression through sound. Experimentation and improvisation are encouraged. Class members may use Kokua’s selection of instruments or bring their own. Music belongs to everyone.
